Nanny For Granny

A Nanny's Story

By Denise Heiskell

Caring for others has always been my priority. My name is Denise Heiskell, and for ten years, I worked as a professional Nanny, nurturing children with patience, empathy, and kindness. I never imagined how seamlessly those same skills would translate into my next chapter: nearly a decade in elder care, specializing in Alzheimer’s and Dementia support.

Caring for those living with memory loss is, in many ways, caring for young children. It’s about Kind validation, gentle redirection and preserving dignity. It’s about creating peaceful moments and joyful connections, even on the hardest days.

This realization inspired me, Denise Heiskell, to launch Nanny for Granny here in Salt Lake City. Alongside a dedicated team of former Nannies experienced in Alzheimer’s and Dementia care, we bring warmth, compassion, and a “family-first” approach to every client we serve.

Because at the heart of caregiving, whether for children or seniors is love and connection. And for me, Denise Heiskell, there’s no greater joy than being someone’s Nanny for Granny.

A Day with Nanny and Granny

Nanny arrived bright and early, greeting Granny with a warm smile and gentle words, using her skills of validation to acknowledge Granny’s feelings and help her feel safe. “Good morning, beautiful! It’s your favorite day for a nice shower!” she said cheerfully, helping Granny take a full shower. On other days, Nanny helped Granny with a refreshing sponge bath, keeping her comfortable and clean.

After the shower, Nanny guided Granny with dressing, brushing her hair, and ensuring good hygiene. Together, they prepared a simple breakfast, with Nanny skillfully redirecting Granny if she grew distracted or worried. After breakfast, it was time for Granny’s medications, which Nanny organized carefully, ensuring everything was taken on time.

Next, they watched one of Granny’s favorite game shows, laughing at the funny moments. To keep Granny moving, Nanny suggested a gentle walk outside, enjoying fresh air and flowers. At lunchtime, Nanny prepared a warm, tasty meal, and Granny smiled as family members stopped by to visit. She felt so happy to be surrounded by love.

After lunch, Granny took a peaceful one-hour nap, waking up refreshed and ready to play with the family pet. Nanny joined her for some crafts, where Granny enjoyed coloring and arranging beads. Later, they started preparing dinner, with Granny helping Nanny set the table, feeling proud to be involved.

Dinner was delicious, and afterwards, Granny enjoyed a short meditation to relax her mind. In the evening, they settled in to watch a classic movie, reminiscing about the old days. As bedtime approached, Nanny helped Granny get ready, ensuring good hygiene and helping her brush her teeth.

They recalled the fun day together, and Nanny read one chapter from Granny’s favorite book aloud, which brought a gentle smile to Granny’s face. Finally, Granny had a sip of water, made one last trip to the bathroom, and cuddled into bed. Nanny tucked her in, wished her good night, and promised another lovely day tomorrow.

With patience, kindness, and her skills of validation and redirection, Nanny made sure Granny felt safe, respected, and loved all day long.
